fly fishing durango and tour reports

what to bring?
The gear used on a fly fishing adventure is critical to the success of any day on the water. At Animas Valley Anglers we recommend clients bring gear that will get the job done properly. If you do not have the gear, let us know and we'll set you up. Rain gear, fleece top and bottoms, wool socks, polarized sunglasses, hat, medications such as an inhaler or bee sting kit, modern fly fishing gear and breathable or neoprene waders are all essential items. Don't forget to bring your sense of adventure and we'll provide the rest!

weather
The weather in our region can be very unpredictable. Even though we have numerous beautiful sunny days, there are times that rain and snow can come in unexpectedly. We will guide rain or shine, however if severe weather affects our fishing plans, we will try to reschedule for another time or a different day. At times in the summer and fall, torrential rain storms will cause our local rivers to muddy up and swell to un-fish able flows. On occasion, this forces us to change our plans and the locations we plan to fish. Just remember to be flexible and ready for an adventure. We have a number of fishing options and we will do what it takes to get you on the best water. You will always have an amazing time and leave with fond memories.

guide trips in colorado

fly fishing till the cows come home
Our season is 365 days long. Most of those days are sunny, but if the day happens to be rainy, chilly or snowy we do have heaters in the drift boats along with warm soup and hot coco. In many cases the dark snowy days can make for some the best fly fishing of the year. So if you're out on a ski trip, sneak away for a couple days by booking a winter angling adventure and do away with cabin fever.

Wilderness Trails Ranch - experience a true western "dude" ranch
If you and your family are looking for a unique vacation, consider Wilderness Trails Ranch. Many of our guests will set aside an extra couple days of fishing before going to the guest ranch. Another option is to fish a day or two with Animas Valley Anglers during your stay at the ranch. Wilderness Trails Ranch is located 35 miles northeast of Durango in the incredibly beautiful San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. The secluded ranch borders the magnificent Piedra Wilderness Study Area, which includes an abundance of wildlife, crystal clear streams, open meadows, high mountain vistas, and vast mountain forests covering thousands of acres. I plan on fishing, but my wife / husband / friend wishes to just tag along. Is this available?
Yes. It works best on float trips, but can be arranged on wade trips as well. The guest will be billed at our single angler rate, plus $25 for the extra person. Lunch is also included for that person on full day trips.

what is included in a trip
Colorado and New Mexico guide trips include your guide, flies, transportation, lunch, drinks, sunscreen and terminal tackle. Polarized sunglasses are also available if they are needed. If you don't have gear (rod/reel or waders) or you have no desire to pack your own along we can help. All rod/reel and wader use is included in the trip cost. Most guide services tack those additional costs on to the guide fee. Also included in the Colorado rates are private land fees for boat launch and fishing access. Trips set up with B&Bs, guest ranches, historic hotels, packers and other businesses we work with will obviously have additional fees. Those fees will be detailed at the time of booking.

What is not included in a trip
Valid Colorado or New Mexico fishing license, 6.8% tax on San Juan (New Mexico) trips and gratuity are not included. Payments made by credit card are subject to a 4% fee. Trips set up with B&Bs, guest ranches, historic hotels, packers and other businesses we work with may have additional fees. Those fees will be detailed at the time of booking with the companies out side of Animas Valley Anglers LLC.
