Private Water and Respect
All AVA guides pride themselves on a 100% commitment to respecting private waters and private property. All private waters we float through or waters we have access to wade fish is treated as though it were our own. We realize how special these waters are and will continue to respect the land, fish and other anglers using the water.

Guiding land owners and their guests on their own private water
Over the years, we have been guiding people on their own private land, to either teach them about the sport of fly fishing or to help them learn more about their own water. Land and property owners also have us out to guide their guests and friends. We have fished and guided most of the rivers and streams in the area. This includes the Florida, Pine, Animas, San Juan, Beaver Creek, ponds and a number of other streams in the area. We offer different packages to suit the needs of any property owner.

Guided Private Water Access
Private water wade and float fly fishing trips offer our guests an opportunity to fish crowd-free waters for large and stunning trout. Over the years AVA has built a number of friendships and partnerships with private land owners who allow us to help better serve our fly fishing clients. These are some of the best waters in the region, if not the West.

pine river guide trips

Pine Song on the Pine River
This tailwater fishery, located directly below Vallecito Reservoir, offers anglers a stunning setting and the clear currents of the Pine River. The river is rich with insect life and is home to a solid population of stunning wild trout. Most of the Pine River below the dam (99.9% of it) flows through private property and this one is the best.

This section of the Pine is managed as a wild trout fishery and is 100% catch and release. This section is also not stocked. Every rainbow, brown and cutbow is wild (from time to time a stocked rainbow from the lake will get sucked through the dam). Fish size ranges from 10 to 20 inches with "un-landables" hooked every season. These waters give an angler a legitimate shot at a 25+ inch fish.

Will has been fishing and guiding this section since his Duranglers days, and has been given access to guide this special fishery once again. Space and availability is very limited, so drop us a line to see if these special waters are available while you are here visiting us.

Rod fees are used by the owners of the property to maintain the land and special waters.

Private water trips do not include: Colorado fishing license,
private water fees and customary gratuity for the guide.

animas river reivate waters

Isgar Ranch on the Animas
This is a fantastic stretch of river with lots of great runs and riffles, deep tanks and high quality trophy trout. Some of the largest trout on the Animas have been caught in the waters that flow through this spectacular ranch. Will Blanchard, head AVA fly fishing guide has been fishing and guiding the 2 miles since 1992. This is a premier section on the Animas River, just minutes from Durango.

A few short miles south of Durango the Animas flows through a checker board of private and Southern Ute lands. A quarter mile from the start of the Southern Ute land lies the large Isgar Ranch. The late, Art Isgar ranched and farmed the property for many, many years with his wife Anne. Art and Anne have been so generous over the years with river access to Blue Lake Ranch B & B guests, AVA guides and our fly fishing clients.

Rod fees from guided float and wade trips on the Isgar Ranch will be donated in Art Isgar's name to the La Plata County Historical Society and The Animas Museum.

Piedra River Ranch
This section of the Piedra offers a chance at nice rainbows and browns. This Ranch is close striking distance to both Durango and Pagosa Springs. The ranch borders private private land.

Rod fees are used by the owners of the property to maintain the land and special trout waters.

Craig's Ranch on the Animas
This section of river offers great runs and riffles plus a couple deep tanks that chunky rainbows and browns call home. This is a great section on the Animas River and is only a few minutes from Durango. The Craig's Ranch borders private and Southern Ute land.

Rod fees are used by the owners of the property to maintain the land and special trout waters.

Root Pond trophy trout lake
Another one of those places that will really surprise you. What the scenery lacks in mountains and pines, the trout make up in size and power. The 8-acre pond is located near the Dolores River, so Root Pond and Dolores split days are available (and kinda fun). We float Root Pond out of our drift boats and is simply a blast. Plus it is a great fishery when all of our other waters are muddied from spring run-off.
